Circle Casting Rite

Items Needed

• A small hammer (symbolizing Mjölnir)
• A small bell or chime
• Optional — incense for purification

Ceremony Opening

Stand in the center of the space you wish to cleanse, or where you plan to cast your circle. Take a grounding breath, focusing on your intent to cleanse and protect. Lift the hammer and bell/chime, offering them in presentation to the gods.

Recite:

I call upon Thor, defender of all,

Mighty protector, hear my call.

Hallow this space with your strength and might;

Defend us here, as we perform our rite.

(1) Strike / ring the bell.

Invoke the Power of the Four Corners

North — Move to the northern corner of your space.

Spirits of North, Earth, strong and true,

Hallow this space with blessings anew.

(2) Strike / ring the bell.

East — Move to the eastern corner and say:

Spirits of East, Air, wispy and light,

Guard this place with your sharp might.

(3) Strike / ring the bell.

South — Move to the southern corner and say:

Spirits of South, Fire, fierce and bold,

Shield this space; let no evil take hold.

(4) Strike / ring the bell.

West — Move to the western corner and say:

Spirits of West, Water, steadfast and strong,

Protect this circle from those who do wrong.

(5) Strike / ring the bell.

Invoke the Power Above and Below

Return to the center of the space, facing north. Hold the hammer and bell above your head, and speak:

Spirits above, where stars align,

Hallow this space with power divine.

(6) Strike / ring the bell.

Lower yourself (either by taking a knee or bending forward) and extend the hammer and bell toward the earth.

Spirits below, where roots run deep,

Hallow this space, in your safe keep.

(7) Strike / ring the bell.

Declare the Space

Raise the hammer outstretched in front of you. Sweeping clockwise, beginning and ending in the north,

proclaim:

By Thor’s power, this space I claim,

Cleansed and consecrated in his name.

No harm may enter, no ill reside;

This sacred place is purified.

(8) Strike / ring the bell.

—Perform blót, spell, ceremony, ritual, etc. —

Release the Space

Finally, ground yourself with a deep breath. Conclude:

Spirits above and below, this space we release.

We give thanks for your blessings of strength and peace.

We bid farewell to the corners four;

thank you for your presence evermore.

Hail to Thor, Allfather’s son;

We give thanks for your protection — our rite is done.

(9) Strike / ring the bell a final time to release the space.
