Handfasting Ceremony Script
Throughout, replace [partner 1] and [partner 2] with the names of the couple.
1. Gathering & Opening
Officiant (speaking to all in attendance):
Welcome, friends and loved ones. We gather here in this space to celebrate the union of [partner 1] and [partner 2]. Today, they pledge their love and commitment to one another, forging a bond that transcends time and space. As we witness this handfasting, let us share in their joy, and lend our support and blessings.
2. Casting the Circle and Invoking the Elements / Deities
Officiant (addressing everyone):
Before we begin, let us create a sacred space — a place apart, where the mundane and the magical unite. In this circle, we honor the beauty of life and love.
The officiant or a chosen participant may walk around the space — perhaps with incense, a candle, or simply a clear intention — while speaking or envisioning a protective, sacred boundary forming around the gathering.
Officiant (reciting):
A circle I cast with devotion and grace,
A realm of joy we now embrace.
Within these bounds, our hearts entwine —
To bless this union with joy divine.

Officiant (continuing):
Now we call upon the guiding energies of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water to bless [partner 1] and [partner 2] on this day, and every day that follows:
Earth: Symbol of steadfastness and growth. May your grounding presence guide these two as they lay down firm roots in their shared life.
Air: Symbol of clarity and communication. May your breeze bring them fresh inspiration, honest words, and openness of heart.
Fire: Symbol of passion and transformation. May your flame warm their spirits, ignite their love, and illumine their path together.
Water: Symbol of healing and empathy. May your gentle flow cleanse their troubles and allow their love to flow freely and endlessly.

3. Declaration of Intent
Officiant (addressing the couple):
[partner 1] and [partner 2], please face each other.
Do you both come here of your own free will, with hearts open to the journey ahead, ready to offer love and acceptance, and to honor the bond you forge here today?
Couple (in unison or individually):
We do.
4. The Meaning of Handfasting
Officiant:
Handfasting is an ancient tradition, a symbol of commitment. The physical act of binding your hands mirrors the binding of your hearts. Through this (cord or ribbon) you tie your lives together, choosing to walk hand in hand, supporting each other in all that life may bring.
5. Vow Exchange
Officiant:
[partner 1], please speak your vows to [partner 2].
First partner recites or reads their vow. If rings are being exchanged, they end their vow with “This ring is a symbol of my unending love and devotion” as they place the ring on their partner’s finger.
Officiant:
[partner 2], please speak your vows to [partner 1].
Second partner recites or reads their vow. If rings are being exchanged, they end their vow with “This ring is a symbol of my unending love and devotion” as they place the ring on their partner’s finger.
6. The Binding
The officiant takes a cord or ribbon. The couple joins hands — right hand to right hand, left hand to left hand, or any arrangement they prefer.
Officiant:
As I wrap this cord, I ask that you think about the beautiful words you have just spoken and hold them in your hearts.
Wrap the cord loosely around the couple’s hands. Some traditions do three wraps, one for each vow, or for three aspects such as love, trust, and mutual respect.
Officiant:
As I wrap this cord around your joined hands, I capture the essence of the vows you have spoken. Each loop symbolizes the bonds of love, respect, and support you pledge here today.
The officiant or a helper gently ties one loose knot around the loops of cord.
Officiant:
By tying this knot, we affirm that your promises are woven together.
Couple (optional response):
We are bound by love now and always.
Officiant:
May this knot serve as a reminder of the strength you have found in each other and the bond you both share.
- Affirmation & Blessing
Officiant:
[partner 1] and [partner 2], as your hands are bound together, so too are your lives bound. May you be strengthened by the energy of Earth, guided by the clarity of Air, warmed by the passion of Fire, and soothed by the flowing grace of Water.

8. Releasing the Hands
Officiant:
Carefully remove the cord while leaving the couple’s hands lightly touching or joined. The couple may choose to keep the cord as a memento.
9. Closing the Circle
Officiant:
With gratitude, we now release the energies, spirits, ancestors, and deities gathered with us. We thank you for lending your presence and ask that you continue to bless [partner 1] and [partner 2] throughout their days together. This circle is open, yet unbroken. May peace and love go with each of you. As above, so below, and in love, we part.

Officiant:
Through the old ways and the new, in the presence of all gathered here, I pronounce you partners in life. You may seal your union with a kiss.
The couple kisses, and the gathering can celebrate — cheering, clapping, drumming, or other joyful expressions.
Adaptations & Tips
Deity or No Deity: If you wish to include a specific pantheon or divine figure, adapt the invocations to name those beings. For a more secular approach, focus on the universal power of love and the natural elements.
Circle Casting: If a formal circle casting feels too “Wiccan” or ritualistic for some, you can simplify that step to a general statement of sacred space or unity.
Symbolic Elements: Some couples like to include additional symbolic elements — lighting unity candles, performing a wine sharing, or planting a tree to mark their union. You can integrate these easily after the vows or just before the circle closing.
Vows: Encourage the couple to write personal vows, if they prefer. Handmade, heartfelt words add a deeply personal touch to the ceremony.
Music & Atmosphere: Consider using live or recorded music to enhance the atmosphere. A drum, flute, harp, or ambient music can help set the tone.
Community Blessing: You might invite attendees to offer short blessings for the couple, either spoken aloud or written on ribbons that can be tied to the cord. This can be woven into the handfasting or placed on an altar or special table.
