Name and meaning
Proto-Germanic berkanan, “birch” — first tree into scorched or cleared ground, white-barked, endlessly renewing. The birch is the North’s midwife tree, and this is the rune of birth, growth, and nurture.
In the rune poems
Attested in all three (bjarkan). The poems praise its leafy crown and greenness; the Anglo-Saxon verse adds the curiosity that the birch brings forth shoots without seed — generation that seems to come from nowhere, which is exactly how new beginnings feel.
Upright
Birth in every register: a child, a project, a season of growth after clearing. Nurture, the household tended, gentle persistent increase — birch-growth, not wildfire. Favorable for family matters and slow flourishing.
Merkstave
Growth checked or hollow: family trouble, a beginning neglected, carelessness with something young and fragile. Sometimes anxiety around a birth of any kind. Tend the sapling before assessing the forest.
