Name and meaning
Proto-Germanic raidō, “riding; the wagon” — the journey and the vehicle at once. The old sense reaches past travel into rhythm and right order: the wheel turning as it should, the sun’s wagon crossing the sky on schedule.
In the rune poems
Attested in all three (reið). The poems are wry about it: riding is easy to praise in the hall and hard on the horse — the journey always costs more from the saddle than from the bench.
Upright
Movement in the right direction: travel, progress, momentum, affairs falling into proper sequence. Also the just outcome — things going as they rightly should. A good rune for beginning ventures that want steady pacing rather than a sprint.
Merkstave
The wheel stuck or the road wrong: delay, disruption, plans overturned, a journey — literal or otherwise — that scatters instead of carries. Sometimes injustice: right order violated. Re-check the route before whipping the horse.
